His terse reply brought Michelle up short. It was as though this new, unfamiliar Alessandro was trying to shut her out of the best part of his world. Resentment led her to make an equally acid retort.

‘I suppose that means you only use it to entertain people who aren’t as grand as you?’

‘No. I go there to be alone.’ His reply ricocheted back to her. ‘My working days are crammed full of people and problems. My studio isn’t. Unless I invite them.’

Their car was approaching the villa’s entrance. There couldn’t have been a greater contrast between the little studio house in France and this gracious collection of buildings. The original, ancient villa had been extended over centuries. It was now a rambling wonderland of tiles, towers and balconies. The car came to a halt in a big cobbled yard, overlooked on every side by dozens of windows. Each one spilled waves of glowing scarlet geraniums over the ancient stonework. It was a startling farewell to summer, but Michelle was in no mood to appreciate her surroundings any more.

‘If you feel like that, Alessandro, then I’m amazed you let me into your secret world.’

‘At the time I thought more of you than I do now.’

Before Michelle had time to think of a reply, Alessandro got out of the car and walked around to open the door for her. As he did so she looked up, first into the closed mystery of his face and then at the towering glory of his ancestral home. Both made her very aware of her insignificance. When staff surrounded the car and began unloading the luggage from its boot it was final proof that Alessandro’s lifestyle was as far removed from hers as it was possible to get. It was an awful lot to take in.
